I want to reflect on a gift God placed in every soul as He fashioned it in the womb. Ecclesiastes 3:11 ‘He placed eternity in our hearts’.
It was the hunger – the longing for something more than this temporal life can offer.
‘For man is not merely a creature of finite time – but a transcendent being, who lives with a hunger for eternal mysteries, purpose, and a reality grounded in the eternal’
God has placed a deep awareness at the very core of every human soul, that we are made for more than this temporal life offers – and without God, we live lives of desperation, driveness and futility. We pursue that which we believe will bring us joy and satisfaction, yet no sooner do we have what our heart desires, than it quickly loses its satisfaction, and we find ourselves reaching for the next ‘fulfilling’ experience, thing or relationship.
Because God has placed eternity in our hearts – our hearts find little lasting joy or satisfaction outside of the eternal life we were created for.
If we are not to be distracted by the chaos, comfort and/or culture of this temporal world we live in, then we must live life, with a steadfast, intentional gaze, fixed on the eternal realities we as believers have been created for. The pursuit of spiritual growth cannot be divorced from the deliberate choosing of God’s Will over our own emotion driven passions, lusts and insecurities.
We are called to pursue the eternal values, of Holiness, and righteousness as we bring our will in loving surrender to form within, the character of Christ, shaped by the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit in love and adoration of the one we are to image. Romans 8:29, John 17:3, Hebrews 12:14, 2 Timothy 2:19 – 22, 1 Peter 3:8-12.
